MDVII in Haute Living San Francisco

MDVII founder Susie Hoimes was recently featured in Haute Living San Francisco, in a profile tracing the life and eye behind the collection.

Born in Kenya to British parents, Susie grew up surrounded by color, texture, and craft: African fabrics learned from her nanny, shells gathered on the beaches of Mombasa, and her grandfather's wool tweed mill in Northern Ireland, where she watched fleece dyed, spun, and woven by hand. That early immersion in beautiful, handmade things became a lifelong pursuit.

After boarding school, world travel, and a stint in New York, she settled in San Francisco in the late 1980s and opened MDVII in 2000, named for the Roman numerals of her Vallejo Street address. The inventory she has assembled since spans couture vintage costume jewelry, Venetian glass, Carlo Scarpa, and Spanish Colonial silver, collected from people and places around the world.

Longtime clients describe her as much for her judgment as her stock, crediting Susie with a deep knowledge of every piece and the instinct to pull exactly the right thing for any occasion.

Now that MDVII has moved online, that same curated eye reaches collectors far beyond San Francisco, from Palm Beach to New York, through private shows and one-of-a-kind pieces shared with a global audience.
